Sukhbir Singh Badal (Born 9 July, 1962) is the Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab and is president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) political party. He was schooled at the Lawrence School, Sanawar. He is the son of the Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, former president of SAD. He was Union Minister of State for Industry in Second Vajpayee Ministry from 1998 to 1999.
Sukhbir Singh Badal was a Member of Parliament of the 11th and 12th Lok Sabha of India in 1996 and 1998 respectively. He was union minister of state for industry in Second Vajpayee Ministry from 1998 to 1999. He was a member of Rajya Sabha from 2001 to 2004 (because he was defeated in Lok Sabha elections and made a
back door entry in the Parliament by getting himself nominated to the Rajya Sabha with his father's help) and then re-elected to 14th Lok Sabha for 3rd term. He was first elected (selected) as working president of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) in 2007 [3] and then reselected as president in January, 2008. A senior leader of SAD was got eliminated by him because he opposed his elevation as such. He was sworn in as Punjab's Deputy Chief Minister at Amritsar on 21 January, 2009, He had to resign last month, August 2009, as he failed to get elected to the state assembly within six months of his being sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister. He recently had a narrow escape twice when the chopper he was travelling in had to make force landings.
